Welcome Music Alumni to Liberty Universities New Site

For years I have admired that the athletes from Liberty University have had a website for years.
(This site is not sponsored by Liberty University but is maintained privately by alumni. Content is based soley on the accuracy submitted by alumni. Opinions expressed are solely represented by those posting.)

Now, it's the Music Major's turn! The focus of this site is for any Music Major who graduated from Liberty with a Music degree. This includes;

Music Education
Sacred Music
Praise and Worship
Voice Major, Piano / Organ Major and any other Instrumental Major

Mission Statement;

Traveled with the very first full time Road Team representing Liberty University; tour covered 35 states, 80,000 miles, 300 church concerts.

Melody Zann Parson Day, Class of 1982
Major: Music Education, Voice, 1982
Masters Degree: Church Music, 1986

Career Highlights Include:
I matriculated in 1977 and graduated in 1982--Music Education Voice. I graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX in 1986--Masters of Music in Church Music. I sang with the Choraleers and Concert Choirs at LBC, and one semester with The LBC Chamber Choir under the direction of Dr. Kim Renas. I studied piano under David Ehrman and Lorna Dobson. I studied voice unders Jane Renas. I loved Dr. Sandra Matthes, and have kept in contact with all the above.

At SWBTS I studied voice under Lynda Poston-Smith. I sang in the Consort Singers under the direction of Dr. David Keith, and the Southwestern Singers under the direction of Dr. Robert Burton.

After graduation from SWBTS, I returned to Virginia where I currently reside, I taught for ten years in the Buckingham County Public School system--secondary choral music (one year primary general music and choruses), where I supervised three student teachers from Liberty University. After teaching in Buckingham, I taught for a year in the Albemarle County Public School system--secondary choral music and general music exploratories. I then taught for three years at The Covenant School (a private religious school)--k-4 general music, 5-6 handbells and chorus.

I then left education and was the Church Music Director for The Salvation Army Corps (social services and church) where I directed their adult choir, youth choir, children's choir, handbell choir and brass choir, as well as general music for the children in their child care center.

I returned to education and taught in the Charlottesville City School system--secondary choral, piano class and general music.

I have studied private voice since 1998 with the late Edmund Najera and Ruth Anne Bishop. I have given several solo voice recitals in Central Virginia, including two at Liberty University. I have sung with the The Oratorio Society of Charlottesville Albemarle, under the the director of the late Paul Hill, Judith Gary and Dr. Donald Loach; the Virginia Consort under the direction of Judith Gary; and The Oratorio Society of Virginia under the direction of L. Thomas Vining.

Mark Merritt, Class of 1985
Major: Sacred Music
Masters Degree: The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY - MCM

College Career Highlights Included: Voice study with Joan (Flewell) Pennock and Kim Renas. Member of the Liberty Chamber Choir and toured the United Kingdom with them twice. Assistant to Sandra Matthes, Music Theory Professor. Award - "Best All-Around Music Major" May, 1985.


Southern Seminary - Double Major - Voice and Choral Conducting. Member of the Seminary Choir, touring ensemble.


Private Study in composition with the late Dr. Henry Hallstrom, an Eastman School of Music graduate whose teachers included noted American composers Randall Thompson and Howard Hanson.
